Fusion is the energy source of sun and stars. In fusion, two light nuclei (e.g. deuterium and tritium) combine to form a heavier nucleus, and a large amount of energy is released. For the past 50 years, scientists have been working on the development of fusion technologies to generate energy on earth.
In this regard ITER (Latin for "the way") is an international nuclear fusion research and engineering megaproject, which will be the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment.
The ITER project aims to make the long-awaited transition from experimental studies of plasma physics to full-scale electricity-producing fusion power stations. The project is funded and run by seven member entities—the European Union, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and the United States.
India’s Contribution to ITER:
India will contribute equipment worth nearly 500 million US dollars to the experiment and will also participate in its subsequent operations and experiments. India’s contributions to ITER are largely based on the indigenous experience and the expertise available in Indian industry.
INTF Design and FEA Validation by AAPL :
INTF Test Facility Vacuum Vessel (INTF Vessel) with customized configuration has been Designed and Manufactured as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1 to house and provide ultra-high vacuum environment for Diagnostic Neutral Beam (DNB) components for the qualification of beam parameters. The entire engineering aspect has been taken care by Airframe Aerodesigns Pvt. Ltd. (AAPL). The esteemed clients of the project were ITER-India, Institute for Plasma Research. The Vessel Manufacturing and Erection has been accomplished by Vaccum Techniques Bangalore.
Engineering Expertise of AAPL has been the key factor behind the design of such a large vessel, the design parameters being:
Length of main shell: 9 meters Length of Duct assembly: 15 meters Ø Diameter of Main shell: 4.5 meters Ø Diameter of Duct assembly: 1- 1.5 meters Ø Total Installed Length: 22 meters Ø Total Volume and Surface area: 180 m3Ø & 260 m2
